O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her voice. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed at her performance and advised viewers to choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil has been consistently giving stellar performance since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
